Yann Ehrlacher, the Lynk & Co driver, took his first pole position in two years (the last time was at Zandvoort in 2019). The 2020 champion was very comfortable on the Italian circuit which is inaugurating a new route this weekend. Spared by the BoP, but also thanks to the hard work of his Cyan racing team, the Alsatian could play a stunning blow to his direct opponents for the title. Jean-Karl Vernay (Hyundai Motorsport) in difficulty with its rather heavy Elantra, will only start from 13th place on Sunday at midday. The observation is even more bitter for Esteban Guerrieri (Honda Racing) who sets the 9th fastest time in qualifying. Small consolation for the Argentinian, he will be on the front row of the first race of the weekend alongside pole sitter Santiago Urrutia (reverse starting grid, tenth place is synonymous with pole position).

The balance seems to tilt strongly in favor of the Chinese clan since Ehrlacher is accompanied in the top 5 by Thed Björk (3rd in qualifying) and his uncle Yvan Muller (5th in qualifying). The danger could come from Fred Vervisch, qualified on the front row of the main race. The Belgian is fourth overall, 35 points behind the French leader.

Gabriele Tarquini (Hyundai Motorsport) who announced his retirement at the end of the season he will start 12th in the two races of the weekend, his last on Italian soil.

Qualification results

The two races will be contested at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. this Sunday/
