Already the oldest winner of the Dakar Rally during his triumph in 2020 with Mini X-Raid, Carlos Sainz reoffended four years later, at the exceptional age of 61. The Spanish veteran sought this performance from deep within himself, as he explained after the finish of the 12th and final special, this Friday January 19.

“It has been extremely difficult (to win the 2024 Dakar. Editor’s note), and the way the race unfolded proves it. It's winning with a car like this that makes this success special." explains the Madrilenian, who drove an Audi RS Q e-tron E2 hybrid.

Carlos Sainz dealt with the after-effects of two broken vertebrae during the 2023 Dakar, following a front somersault. “The start of this 2024 edition was very difficult, after an injury and two fractured vertebrae. To recover and win here is a satisfaction, and for me, to be part of this new history that Audi has written in this race is a beautiful thing to have participated in it. » Carlos Sainz is therefore satisfied, but without getting emotional.

“The victory in a very competitive edition, a very special car, the fourth brand with which I win, all these elements mean a lot to me. I am very happy for Audi. For our last attempt with this technological car, we converted the test. I am delighted and I thank them for their trust. »

“El Matador” then congratulated his fierce opponent Sébastien Loeb (Bahrain Raid Xtreme), which settles for 3rd place after a broken triangle in the penultimate special.
