Former Spanish pilot Juan Fernández i Garcia, better known as Juan Fernández, died at the age of 89 on the night of Sunday to Monday June 22. The native of Sabadell in Catalonia distinguished himself in the Hill Climb by winning the European Championship in the Sports Car class twice (1973, 1974), but also nine crowns at national level, a record.

The Catalan also crossed the Pyrenees to compete five times in the 24 Hours of Le Mans between 1970 and 1981 on various cars like the Ferrari 512S, the Porsche 935 or the Lola T600. However, it was at the wheel of a Porsche 908/03 that he achieved his best result, a fifth place in 1973 alongside his compatriot Francisco Torredemer and Frenchman Bernard Chenevière for Escuderia Montjuich.

All AUTO editorial staffhebdo sends its condolences to the family, loved ones, and friends of Juan Fernández.
