Launched in 2012, the ultra-friendly little Japanese 2+2 coupe developed in cooperation with Subaru (where it takes the name BRZ) will therefore have a second generation.

Toyota GR86: Living as a couple

Its first 200 copies sold convinced its parents to continue the adventure, and that's good.

The recipe for success is maintained, or even slightly enhanced. If we note a subtle change of name – from GT86 to GR86, in reference to Gazoo Racing – the attention is mainly captured by the naturally aspirated engine whose displacement increases from 2.0 to 2.4 liters.

This block, still a flat 4-cylinder from Subaru, crystallized until then the only “small” criticism that could be made against the GT86, as its enjoyable balance could have absorbed much more power and torque. .

The Japanese pair therefore heard customer demand, the GR86 gaining 30 hp (230 hp now) and 45 Nm of torque (250 Nm). This solution makes it possible to keep the contained mass of 1270 kg almost unchanged, as well as the distribution of masses which has made the legend of this model.

With structural rigidity up 50% and a center of gravity still kept very low (thanks to the flat engine), this second generation still promises great rides on winding roads. Its marketing in Europe should take place in 2022, but neither its price nor its ecological penalty (unfortunately) have been communicated.
