- For the kick-off of the Sonora Rally (Mexico), third round of the World Championship Rally-Raid (W2RC), it was the winner of the last Dakar, Nasser Al-Attiyah, who won the first stage with his Toyota Hilux.
- The Qatari took control 27 seconds ahead of Yazeed Al Rajhi on the first 170 kilometer stage.
- Sébastien Loeb set the third time 2'38 behind Al-Attiyah. The W2RC championship leader struggled in the opening position in Mexico. “As we opened the road we knew it wouldn't be easy as there were a lot of very narrow roads and that meant we had to cut through the bushes with the side of the car! It made us lose a little time, but overall, being third in the stage is good, it’s not so bad”, reacted the Frenchman.
- Sebastian Halpern finished fourth at 3'17 ahead of Guerlain Chicherit, fifth at 3'46 after receiving penalties for speeding.
- For stage 2, the Sonora Rally caravan will leave the bivouac in downtown Hermosillo to join the “beach camp” of Puerto Peñasco in the northwest of the state after 162 kilometers of special.
