The Sonora Rally, new round of the World Championship rally-raid (W2RC), continues to do damage. The day after the accident and Sébastien's abandonment Loeb and Fabian Lurquin (BRX), it was the turn of Guerlain Chicherit and Alex Winocq (GCK Motorsport) to be slowed down during the 4th stage.

The winners of the 2022 Rally Morocco led the 248 km special around Puerto Peñasco (Mexico) and even came within seconds of 2nd place in the general classification before a mechanical failure forced them to return to the bivouac.

“As at every stage of the week, I felt very good, explains Guerlain Chicherit. The speed was good today, whereas before the 4×4 was too soft at the rear. So we went back to the settings we had in Morocco last year, I was really happy, and I immediately regained confidence.

We were driving at the right speed without doing anything crazy to catch up with Nasser (Al-Attiyah), but an alternator problem appeared. We turned everything off to try to save it but it stopped after a while; It's a real shame but we'll be back tomorrow to fight again. »

This problem benefits Nasser Al-Attiyah and Mathieu Baumel (Toyota). The reigning W2RC champions, winners of the 2023 Dakar, won the special and extended their lead over Yazeed Al-Rajhi and Timo Gottschalk (Toyota) to more than 7 minutes before the final special of the Sonora Rally, scheduled for Friday.

“It was a tough stage,” admits Nasser Al-Attiyah. We were bothered by a competitor who was generating a lot of dust. But we did a good job and our stage victory allows us to score 5 additional points in the championship! »
