Sébastien Loeb and Fabian Lurquin (Bahrain Raid Xtreme) were betting big on the Sound Rally, scene of the third round of the World Championship of rally-raid (W2RC) in Mexico. The Franco-Belgian tandem started the event flat-out, winning the second stage in the desert between the cacti and taking the lead of the competition with a three-second lead.
This stage success forced them to start in first place this Wednesday, April 26, for a 350 km stage around Penasco. Unfortunately, the W2RC leader will not see the end of it. In fact, after only 12 km, the BRX T1+ fell into a ditch and came to rest on its roof!

Sébastien Loeb escaped unscathed, unlike his navigator Fabian Lurquin, who complained of his right shoulder. He can be seen in the video above, holding his right arm in a sling.
Even if the British 4×4 has been put back on its wheels, it will not take part in this third special of the Sonora Rally, a new event on the W2RC calendar. Fabian Lurquin left to carry out a medical check-up for possible injuries.
If the medical report is positive, Loeb-Lurquin will be able to get back on the road and try to score special points in the championship. Otherwise, the reigning world vice-champions of the specialty would be withdrawn and they would lose their points collected during the first two days of racing in Mexico.
“We went out with Fabian, commented Sébastien Loeb on his social networks. I got trapped, without seeing the ditch on the outside of a curve… It's a big blow for the championship, but unfortunately it's the race. »
Meanwhile, their main rivals in W2RC, Nasser Al-Attiyah and Mathieu Baumel (Toyota) virtually take first place in the Sonora Rally at km 125 of the stage. The winners of the 2023 Dakar have a great opportunity to overtake Loeb-Lurquin at the top of the W2RC. Before this special, the Qatari driver and his French co-driver were only 15 points behind.
