Olivier Pla: “Everything to do well”

How did you get involved in this adventure?

I had done the four races of theEndurance Cup with Meyer Shank in 2016, and it went remarkably well, including a victory at Petit Le Mans. Michael (Shank. Editor's note) promised me that if he came back to Prototype, he would call me back, which he did. Even though I knew it well before Mazda downsized, the timing was perfect.

Has the team changed a lot?

Some are still there, but at the time, Michael had a total of nine employees. Now he is 37 and participating in theIndyCar, a championship which requires resources if we want to shine. And the DPi team also benefits from it. The structure has developed on a technical level, it has really gained momentum.

Do you benefit from Penske data?

Some, but not all. We are still learning the car, and having Dane and Juan Pablo (Cameron and Montoya, editor's note), who have driven the ARX-05 for the last three years, in our ranks is an undeniable plus. We now have to put everything in place and continue working to get the most out of the car's potential. This requires time, but does not mean that we do not aim to win this weekend.

How is this Acura different from the Mazda to drive?

The Mazda's strong point is its weight distribution and low tire degradation, which can be explained by its small engine (an in-line 4-cylinder. Editor's note). On the Acura, you feel the weight more in the rear. The two cars work differently, but I quickly got used to it and it is by driving that I will be able to get the most out of it.

How is the relationship with your teammates?

Dane (Cameron. Editor's note) is as fast on the track as he is calm outside the car. He's not a big talker, but that doesn't bother me since I'm the same. He concentrates on his job and doesn't play the star system. And working with a driver of Montoya's caliber, whom I discovered at Roar, is pleasant. He has an amazing background, which is beneficial to me, as well as to the team. We have, I think, everything we need to do well.

It will be necessary given the plateau…

It is certain that although there are fewer cars than in the past, the teams and crews entered are of a very high level. It promises some great races.

Will we see you elsewhere in 2021?

THEIMSA is my priority, with 10 races and quite a few test sessions. I may spend a lot of time in the United States. But I hope to be able to do Le Mans, ideally in a Proto.
