The two 963s from Porsche Penske Motorsport will use the numbers 6 and 7. Historic figures for both entities, notably with the RS Spyder, champion of the American Le Mans Series from 2006 to 2008. The two examples of the period already displayed these numbers at the time.

“Both number 6 and number 7 have a rich tradition and history with Team Penske”

“When I see our new Porsche 963 with racing numbers 6 and 7, it brings back wonderful memories of the glorious era of the RS Spyder in the USA”, smiles Thomas Laudenbach. The current vice president of Porsche Motorsport was responsible for the engine development of the successful RS Spyder between 2005 and 2008.

“We won everything there was to win at the time, he continues. For us, these were class victories in the LM P2 category, but we still achieved a major coup: the overall victory at the 12 Hours of Sebring. We now look forward to adding to these great and triumphant moments and fighting for overall victory at Daytona, Sebring and other championship events IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar. »

“Both the number 6 and number 7 have a rich tradition and history with Team Penske, and we want to build on that heritage as we begin this new journey with the Porsche Penske Motorsport program, added Roger Penske. The 6 delivered Team Penske's first-ever victory with a class victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona over 56 years ago, so we're excited to continue the tradition. Our teams have achieved numerous race victories and series championships over the years with these numbers on the cars and we look forward to adding to that track record of success in the future. »

The two 963s from Porsche Penske Motorsport will compete at the 24 Hours of Daytona (January 26-29, 2023). The drivers who will be fielded in IMSA have not yet been designated, although some like Mathieu Jaminet or Matt Campbell have already expressed their desire to participate in this championship.
