24 Hours of Le Mans, Free Practice 1 – Toyota by a short head in front of the LM P2s

The LM P2s are hot on the heels of the Toyotas and Alpine while the Glickenhaus were discreet at Le Mans during this first official session. Ferrari beat Corvette in GTE Pro.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans 2021 has barely started that it is difficult to see clearly in the hierarchy between the new Hypercars and the usual LM P2s. Moreover, a separation is not possible between the two categories, as the gap is so tiny.

Indeed, at the end of this first free practice session, the first LM P2, the No. 07 United Autosports USA Oreca 22 of Phil Hanson, Fabio Scherer and Filipe Albuquerque is in fourth place, but only 132 thousandths of the leading car, the Toyota GR010 Hybrid Mike conway, Kamui Kobayashi and José Maria Lopez!

The No. 8 Toyota Kazuki Nakajima, Sébastien Buemi et Brendon Hartley is third and frames the only Alpine A480 Hypercar by Matthieu Vaxiviere, Nicolas lapierre and André negrao.

The two American Glickenhaus 007 LMHs performed a slight notch lower but did not encounter any problems in Sarthe (6th and 7th). The Jota n°38 and the Ferrari 488 No. 47 of Cetilar Racing collided at the Tertre Rouge corner but the drivers were unhurt.

The other unforeseen figure was performed by Marco Sorensen. The Dane, outgoing winner of the GTE Pro with Aston Martin at Le Mans, hit the wall as soon as he left the pits at the start of the session at the wheel of the Oreca 07 of the Danish team High Class Racing, damaging the rear axle of his mount.

In GTE Pro, Ferrari took the advantage thanks to the #52 of Daniel Serra, Miguel Molina and Sam Bird on Corvette, and not Porsche as could be anticipated. The #8 American C64.R of Alexander Sims, Tommy Milner and Nick Tandy is ahead of the #911 Porsche 91 RSR.

In GTE Am, we see a quartet of Porsches at the forefront, firstly the #1 Team Project 56 ahead of the English from GR Racing.

The first qualifying session will be held later between 19 p.m. and 20 p.m.
