Self-portrait (at Le Mans)

To properly celebrate the 80th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, we asked the Belgian writer Jean-Philippe Toussaint to write an original text on the biggest endurance race in the world. This is the second time that the author of The Bathroom, his first novel, and Self-portrait (abroad), came to Sarthe, after a first experience in 2010, in the wake of the BMW GT2 decorated by American artist Jeff Koons. This very personal story is accompanied by four photographs that he took himself.

Self-portrait (at Le Mans)

I will begin with a dizzying ellipse: not a word of the journey to Le Mans, not a word of my departure from Paris and the Hôtel Récamier, where my last hours of calm and auditory tranquility took place, not a word of my arrival at the Exhibition Center to collect the accreditations of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, just a word from Jeanine and the good-natured lunch she cooked for us at the Portes du Circuit (to pay homage to her rillettes, Mancelle nobility oblige)…

Discover the entire, very personal story of our guest in the new issue 1863 of AUTOhebdo. The new AUTOhebdo is now available here in digital version for iPad, PC and Mac, and on newsstands.
