The BMW M8 GTE begins testing at the Lausitzring

Alongside Ferrari, Porsche, Ford and Aston Martin, BMW will join the contingent of brands officially entered in the GTE Pro category next year in WEC and at Le Mans. If the Munich firm had already confirmed the M8 as the basis for its future GTE, the latter remained very discreet until now.

After a debugging carried out on July 1, BMW Motorsport finally carried out its first test session last week in Germany at the Lausitzring in the presence of boss Jens Marquardt. The car was entrusted for three days to the Belgian Maxime Martin and the German Martin Tomczyk.

“I had fun with the car, admits the latter. The BMW M8 GTE is fun to drive from the start, and remains easy for us drivers to understand, which is important. We have accumulated the kilometers and a lot of data.

We have also started work on performance. We will work more and more intensively during the next sessions, and build on the basis of the Lausitzring runs. »

After new tests scheduled in Europe and the United States, the M8 GTE will be used in the WEC and at Le Mans by Team MTEK, but will make its competitive debut next January at the 24 Hours of Daytona (Florida) as part of the 'IMSA.
