THE FIA validates the new points scale

The FIA World Council which was held this Wednesday in Paris validated several changes for the next season of WEC which will be extended over two years.

The WEC LMP Drivers, LMP1 Teams, GTE Drivers and GTE Manufacturers titles will always be awarded at the end of the Super Season spread over two years which will include two editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. A trophy Endurance will be awarded to each best LMP2 and GTE Am team as well as to each crew in these categories.

En revanche, il n’y aura plus de titre Constructeurs en LMP1 suite au retrait de Porsche. Un constructeur ne pourra pas engager de voiture non-hybride mais il pourra motoriser des écuries privées. Le « branding » d’une voiture non hybride sera autorisé “under certain conditions, for a partner, including a manufacturer”. The technological equivalences between naturally aspirated and turbo engines are made official. The LMP1 regulations will remain in force for the next three years.

As in ELMS, teams will be able to refuel at the same time as they change tires.

The new points scale has been established:
– The 6-hour tests will remain at the same scale.
– The 1500 Miles of Sebring will offer 25% more points than the 6 hour races.
– The 24 Hours of Le Mans will only offer 50% more points than a 6-hour race, compared to double in the past.

“The format of the 2018-2019 Super Season, accompanied by the new points allocation system following the different events as well as the notion of a single car, the highest classified within the same team, guarantees a competitive and competitive championship. an interesting competition between the teams. The structure of this new championship looks promising,” comments Pierre Fillon, president of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest.

“While waiting for the very promising 2020 regulations, these new regulations as well as the numerous positive feedback that we have already received from our competitors regarding the Super Season, guarantee an incredible level of competition in LMP1. With no less than five manufacturers in LMGTE Pro, and growing interest from gentlemen drivers in LMP2 and LMGTE Am, all these elements seem positive for endurance fans in particular and for motorsport in general., adds Gérard Neveu, the general director of the WEC.

“With the FIA, we have established a regulation that could be described as stimulating. This will give a new dynamic to LM P1 and will infuse a different racing strategy for all categories, with tire changes and refueling being able to be carried out simultaneously., specifies Vincent Beaumesnil, the sporting director of the ACO.
