The rumor grew bigger and bigger and was finally true. Lamborghini officially enters the category in Endurance, in the Hypercar category of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and GTP ofIMSA as of 2024.

The Sant'Agata Bolognese brand's LMDh program is a logical continuation of the Italian manufacturer's sporting development, which began with Grand Touring in the 2000s through the Super Trofeo and GT3.

“This move to the next level of sports cars marks an important milestone for our company,” said Lamborghini head honcho Stephan Winkelmann. “We will measure ourselves against the best on the most demanding circuits. On the one hand, this will give even more visibility to our highly successful motorsport program, but it will also allow us to test the technologies of tomorrow: our LMDh prototypes will become our most sophisticated open laboratory on four wheels. »

Giorgio Sanna, head of Lamborghini Squadra Corse, is delighted with this arrival in LMDh: “I am very pleased that Lamborghini is taking the next step in its motorsport journey, entering LMDh at the highest level of sports car competition. The LMDh prototype will play a special role in Lamborghini's motorsport strategy, giving us the unique opportunity to expand our customer racing activities to new platforms, and strengthen our long-term partnership with customer teams and drivers. . »

Pierre Fillon, president of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest: “Being joined by a brand as prestigious as Lamborghini is fantastic for endurance racing. Hypercar, the new top of the range in the discipline, has attracted car manufacturers from around the world. We will soon celebrate the centenary of 24 Hours of Le Mans and another golden age of endurance is just beginning. For my part, I am ready to make the most of it.

IMSA President John Doonan said: “ IMSA has enjoyed a long-standing partnership with Lamborghini since the introduction of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America ten years ago. Since then, we have seen Lamborghini Squadra Corse successfully expand its presence in GTD, where it has achieved multiple victories at Daytona, Sebring and many other IMSA events. We are proud that Lamborghini confirms its intention to further expand its IMSA footprint in 2024 in GTP and the top category of prototype sports car racing. Having another manufacturer of this caliber commit to racing in GTP strengthens the LMDh technical platform we have developed alongside our partners at the ACO, and we look forward to seeing these new Lamborghini prototypes make their mark. debut at the 24 Rolex 2024 At Daytona.”

Frédéric Lequien, CEO of the FIA WEC, said: “We are honored that Lamborghini will join the Hypercar category of the FIA WEC from 2024. Lamborghini is an iconic brand, but it has never competed in the premier class of endurance racing before. They will join the FIA WEC at a very exciting time in its history. For the 2024 season, an exceptional line-up of brands will compete in our premier category. The competition will be fierce but we have no doubt that Lamborghini will be at the heart of the battle. Lamborghini has had a lot of success in other endurance racing categories, so we look forward to seeing them compete for overall victories at our signature events.
