Toyota should make its decision soon

Toyota Gazoo Racing indicated in its pre-race press release for the 6 Hours of Fuji (Japan) held this weekend that it would soon unveil its program concerning its future in Endurance.

The organizers of WEC are awaiting projects from Toyota which would remain the only hybrid LMP1 manufacturer present following the departure of Porsche at the end of the season. The calendar for the next season will be extended over two years with five events in 2018 and three in 2019, including twice the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the program.

“Toyota’s discussions regarding its future participation in WEC are currently being held with shareholders. This was the subject of several articles in the press, the level of accuracy of which varied. A decision is expected this month although it will not necessarily be in Fuji”, the press release said.

Speculation raised a possible participation of Toyota Gazoo Racing until the next edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Japanese manufacturer not being enthusiastic about the idea of not having rivals of the same level on the track. The ACO also suggested thata possible return of Peugeot to Endurance was not yet on the agenda.

Toyota has not won since the 6 Hours of Spa (Belgium) last May. The Japanese manufacturer, which will compete in its national round this weekend, is 73,5 points behind its rival Porsche.
