A McLaren surprise for Geneva: Le Mans in the sights?

June 1995. McLaren is imposed on 24 Hours of Le Mans with the F1 GTR n°59 of JJ Lehto, Yannick Dalmas and Masanori Sekiya. A little less than 23 years after this historic success for the Woking manufacturer, the next Geneva Motor Show could initiate a new chapter for the British brand.

The latest press release from McLaren specifies, in addition to the presentation of a new version of the Senna hypercar, that an additional surprise will come from the McLaren Automotive press conference, scheduled for 10:45 a.m. next Tuesday.

A surprise which could concern a return of McLaren to Le Mans. Rumors are growing around a commitment to the GTE category, especially as new regulations are looming after 2019, the date on which the homologation of the current cars was recently postponed by the ACO.

McLaren had also studied the possibility of entering LM P1 this year based on an existing LM P2 chassis, and could remain attentive in the event of a return to a GTP-type regulation, which the ACO would consider.
