Adrian Newey not surprised by Mercedes

Adrian Newey, the technical director of Red Bull Racing, spoke in the Jerez paddock (Spain) of his team's difficulties in catching up with Mercedes F1 in the current situation. The W06 Hybrid surprised on the first day winter testing by completing 157 laps with Nico Rosberg. The only hitch for the Brackley team occurred in the second part of the second day following a slight cooling problem.

“The regulations emphasize the engine and greatly restrict the chassis part,” commented Adrian Newey on Italiaracing. “That’s not to say there aren’t differences between the cars, but it’s very difficult to get an advantage. (The reliability of the Mercedes) is not a surprise. Thanks to their engine, they were able to focus on the chassis and make it reliable."

Red Bull Racing saw its testing become complicated following a slight off-track incident by Daniil Kvyat which damaged the front wing of the RB11. The Russian must be content with installation laps without this element, the Austrian team waiting to receive spare parts.
