Alguersuari: “Be the best Spaniard”

Jaime Alguersuari (Toro Rosso) had a lot to prove at the start of the season. Arrived in mid-2009 to replace Sébastien Bourdais, the young Spaniard did not arrive in F1 in ideal conditions. But, this year, he did not disappoint his employers, finishing twice in the points and standing up to big names on the field, starting with Michael Schumacher.

« I'm quite happy with my start to the season, explains Alguersuari. A lot of things happened, I got to know a lot of circuits. Experience-wise, it's a very good half-season, and I hope we can improve our performance until the end of the year. »

In addition to Michael Schumacher, alongside whom the Spaniard believes that he has “ a lot to learn » and whose return is a good thing, Fernando Alonso is a leading reference. Admired in Spain, the native of Oviedo popularized Formula 1 on the Iberian Peninsula. For Jaime Alguersuari, the pilot Ferrari is an example… that he wishes to surpass.

« Fernando and I have traveled in completely different ways. He was in Formula 1 before me, he drove a lot in F1 before being World Champion, so it?s very difficult to compare us. But what is clear is that he is a very good driver, very talented. In Spain, he is the reference. He is my reference. I wish, one day, to be the best Spanish driver in the world. I hope it happens soon! »
