The relation between Fernando Alonso (Alpine) and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) is equivalent to “I love you, me neither”. A new salty episode in their shared history was written on the sidelines of testing for the Grand Prix de México (Mexico) this Saturday, October 29.
It all started with an interview given by the Spanish pilot to the Dutch media De Telegraaf. The double world champion F1 (in 2005 and 2006) explained how, in his eyes, the two coronations Max Verstappen (Red Bull) in 2021 and 2022 were more valuable than Lewis Hamilton's seven crowns (1 with McLaren, 6 with Mercedes).
“I also have a lot of respect for Lewis, declared the Spaniard. Still, it's different when you win seven world titles when you only had to fight with your teammate.
I also think that a title (of that type) has less value compared to a champion who has fewer titles but who had to fight against other drivers with equal or even superior equipment. » A barely veiled analysis of the situation in which Max Verstappen found himself in 2021 against Mercedes.
That was all it took to unleash passions on our dear social networks! The fans and “haters” of each clan sent their little message, in (dis)favor of Fernando Alonso, until he put the kibosh on his Twitter account.
And again…
Please, all the titles are amazing, well deserved and inspiring. Incomparable to each other and let's enjoy champions and legends of our current time. Tired of the continuous search for headlines. Let's enjoy them 💪.- Fernando Alonso (@alo_oficial) October 29, 2022
“Please, all titles (from F1 world champion. Editor’s note) are superb, well-deserved and inspiring. (They are) incomparable to each other and instead enjoy the champions and legends of our time. (I am) tired of the constant search for sensational headlines. Let's enjoy these legends. »
Obviously, Lewis Hamilton has learned the Dutch language since he reacted to this interview with a killer Tweet. No text, a simple chicken raise and a photo showing him triumphant at the 2007 United States Grand Prix, with at his side on the second step of the podium… Fernando Alonso!
- Lewis Hamilton (@LewisHamilton) October 30, 2022
This cryptic message painfully reminds the pilot Alpine his defeat in 2007 against rookie Lewis Hamilton. Hired by McLaren at a high price, Fernando Alonso had been pushed around by the British debutant, to the point of losing control during the season, between internal rivalries, settling of scores via the Spygate affair involving Ferrari and a defeat in the championship (tie on points but tie-break based on the number of second places registered). The two McLaren drivers were also pipped to the post by the Ferrari of Kimi Räikkönen by one unit.
To put on a good face, Fernando Alonso admitted in the Telegraaf interview that he had not fought against his teammate at Renault Giancarlo Fisichella to obtain his titles in 2005 and 2006, and that Max Verstappen did not fight against either Sergio Perez or his former teammate Alex Albon to win races.
