Binotto: “Standardization can be a risk for F1”

The desire of the sporting authorities to lower the costs of the racing stables Formula 1 by 2021 via the standardization of several mechanical parts is not to everyone's taste. Among the entities not very motivated by this project is Ferrari. Mattia Binotto, invited to a press conference on Friday September 6 in Monza (Italy), did not beat around the bush.

“We think that standardization can even be a risk for F1 in the future, because first of all you don't know what level the reliability will be at the very beginning (of this process. Editor’s note), launched the boss of the Scuderia.

To corroborate his point, Mattia Binotto recalls the concerns encountered by Formula 2 at the start of the 2018 season. " With lTheir common clutch, they had to start behind the Safety Car during many races because the clutch was not reliable enough. »

The Swiss then gave a more polite speech. " We could accept this standardization, but we must be certain that it is reliable, that the level of quality is optimal and that the level of performance is in line with what is expected of F1. »

Finally, standardization could cause the opposite effect desired by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), that is to say a surge in costs. “We believe that for most of the standard elements that we are offering for 2021, we will all have to modify the design of the car and we will have to take care that each component works correctly. All this is extra cost. »

Mattia Binotto specifies that this budget surplus would occur “from today until 2021”, but that it would disappear from the introduction of this rule.
