After showing consistency during the three free practice sessions in Baku, placing in the top 10 each time, Esteban Ocon failed to convert it into qualifying. While his Alpine had the pace to get to Q3 like Fernando Alonso was able to do it, the Norman must be content with twelfth position and elimination in Q2. According to him, he owes this result to the error of Lando Norris at turn 15 which caused a yellow flag.

« We got a yellow flag on our lap and I couldn't continue my run. The first run was a worn tire run so it was just a run where we just had to get our bearings and then set the time on this second run with the new tires. And we were 5 tenths ahead, 3 tenths easy so we should have gone to Q3 », says the Norman at the microphone of Canal +

While he was in the process of improving his mark, the Habs were forced to slow down. “ I was ahead of Fernando (Alonso) at that time so yeah it hurts because it's two times in a row in Monaco (red flag in Q3 caused by Sergio Pérez) and then here where we have to qualify better », explains Esteban Ocon.

But if in the Principality, a bad qualifying session compromises almost all your chances in Baku, the driver Alpine can still hope to score big points. “ It's a shame but in our misfortune, it's a difficult qualification but tomorrow it can go up again because it's a track where there are opportunities, where it can double. »

The top speed displayed by Alpine could allow the Norman to make numerous overtakes in the last sector. “ We have better speed than that so we will do everything to be able to come back and score points. We will have to reach the end of this race, it will be extremely important but we will do everything to », Underlines the Habs. In qualifying, Fernando Alonso dominated his teammate 5 times
