Giovinazzi confirmed at Sauber

Antonio Giovinazzi will replace Marcus Ericsson at Sauber F1 Team in 2019. The Italian will compete in his first full season in the discipline.

Giovinazzi confirmed at Sauber

Antonio Giovinazzi has finally found a full-time driving seat in F1. After replacing Pascal Wehrlein at Sauber F1 Team during the first two Grands Prix of the 2017 season, the 24-year-old Italian will finally be able to take advantage of a full-time starting position by joining the Swiss team under the direction of Frédéric Vasseur playing alongside the experienced Kimi Räikkönen.

Supported by Scuderia Ferrari, Antonio Giovinazzi seems to have managed to prove himself more convincing than Marcus Ericsson who is struggling to make his mark despite his 4 seasons at Sauber. The Italian had become a threat to the Swede since he became a test pilot for the Hinwil structure. He will also be at the wheel of the C37 this Friday during free practice for the Russian GP in Sochi.

“We first signed Kimi Räikkönen who is a really very experienced driver and who will contribute to the development of our car while progressing the team as a whole, notes Frédéric Vasseur, Team Principal of Sauber F1 Team. We are delighted with Alfa Romeo to now welcome Antonio Giovinazzi who will replace Charles Leclerc (recruited by Scuderia Ferrari). We have already had the opportunity to work with him in the past and he has shown that he has great potential. We are determined and motivated. Our goal remains to improve in order to be able to fight for positions that matter. »

Sauber also indicated that Marcus Ericsson would remain with the team as its third brand ambassador driver.
