Haas is seriously considering switching to racing guidelines

This season, Romain Grosjean et Kevin Magnussen seem to be attracted to each other. An irresistible attraction which resulted in several unfortunate contacts (Barcelona, Silverstone, and Hockenheim). Say that their employer Haas moderately tastes these quibbles are an understatement – you should have seen the cold anger of boss Guenther Steiner after the German GP last Sunday.

The Italian manager has had a few days to digest and think about an action plan ahead of the Hungarian round which takes place this weekend. This Thursday in Budapest, Steiner has planned to bring Grosjean and Magnussen together for a new update.

« Maybe we'll get to the point where we'll have to tell them what to do as soon as they're close to each other on the track., whispered the man from the Dolomites. Maybe decision-making power should be taken away from them? I have to be firmer, it's the only solution at this level.

We've reached the point where we're happy to get through it without any injuries. They could have done like at Silverstone – damaged both cars – and we came home empty-handed. We must find a better solution because this type of incident is intolerable for the team ».

Steiner dismissed the hypothesis of a one-off replacement as punishment on the grounds that it upset the balance of the team too much. “ We would look helpless and desperate ", he added.

Asked about the potential impact that these repeated mishaps could have on the identity of the Haas driver duo in 2020, the team principal responded that their role included maintaining calm chemistry within the team.

« I don't care if they get along well off the track as long as they respect each other on the track, Steiner said. I find it even counterproductive to try to force a friendship between two people ».

Magnussen theoretically has a contract with Haas for 2020, while Grosjean only has one option a priori. In this matter, as with all major strategic decisions, it is Gene Haas, founder of the eponymous team, who has the last word.
