Hamilton: “It seemed impossible”

Relegated to 43 points behind Nico Rosberg on the evening of the Spanish Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton is today a small point behind his teammate after the British Grand Prix, where the German, second under the checkered flag, lost his result and fell back to third place, penalized for radio communications deemed prohibited by the race commissioners.

During a question and answer with sponsor UBS, Hamilton returned to this rise in the rankings, which allows him to envisage a third consecutive title, and a fourth in his career. “It’s crazy to think about the 43 point deficit I had at the time, which seemed impossible to fill. I am only human and during those days I thought it was impossible. You must keep going, as painful as it may be, as difficult as it may be.

You may get over this quickly, or it might take longer, but you just have to keep going. It's not about how you fall, but how you get back up from those experiences that make you stronger. I feel stronger right now than I did at the beginning.

Look where I am now, I'm one point behind in the championship. I'm even surprised. I sometimes think, “if I had given up at some point”… It just goes to show that you never ever give up. »

The Briton also spoke about the rest of his career, he who is not aiming for a particular record. “I want to be as good as I can be, but I don’t believe being as good as I can be is defined by someone else’s record.

Even though I'm only here for two more years, I'm going to give everything I have. Even if I had to stop now, I think I learned a lot, and it's been an incredible time. There isn't a moment or thing I would change, because that's what brought me here, regardless of whether I broke so-and-so's record. »
