Hamilton untouchable in Monza qualifying

Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) won pole for the Italian Grand Prix by completing a lap of Monza in the last qualifying session in 1’21”135. The three-time world champion obtained his fifth pole on the Italian track, equaling the record of Ayrton Senna and Juan Manuel Fangio. His teammate Nico Rosberg lost almost half a second late without being able to do anything to catch the Briton in his two attempts. The W07 Hybrid will start on soft tires unlike its competitors after having set their times in Q2 with yellow sidewall tires.

The Ferrari de Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen are on the second row in front Valtteri Bottas (Williams) Et les Red Bull de Daniel Ricciardo et Max Verstappen. The Force India of Sergio Pérez and Nico Hulkenberg have anticipated the Haas by Esteban Gutiérrez who gives his team its first passage into Q3.

Romain Grosjean (Haas) set the 12th time in Q2 but the former GP2 champion will only start from 17th position on the grid following his penalty. The Frenchman was ranked between Felipe Massa (Williams) and Fernando Alonso (McLaren). Pascal Wehrlein (Manor) took 13th place ahead of Jenson Button (McLaren) and Carlos Sainz Jr. (Toro Rosso).

Esteban Ocon (Manor) was unable to qualify due to new mechanical damage that occurred on its car. The regrets are all the greater for the Frenchman as his teammate Pascal Wehrlein managed to qualify for the second session.

Daniil Kvyat (Toro Rosso) was the first eliminated from Q1 after falling short of half a tenth of a second from Fernando Alonso. The Russian beat the Saubers of Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson and the Renault by Jolyon Palmer and Kevin Magnussen.
