Inspired by aviation, the 1 F2021 wings will be more spectacular

The fins will be more advanced than the first mount released in the summer of 2018, thanks to a lowering, widening of the parts as well as a much bolder design.

Inspired by aviation, the 1 F2021 wings will be more spectacular

Do you want single-seaters with an explosive look? There Formula 1 and the International Automobile Federation (FIA) are redoubling their efforts on the visual appearance that cars should take during the technical revolution of 2021.

After the first wind tunnel images published in August, Pat Symonds, the technical director of sport, accompanied by the technical boss of the car for the FIA Nikolas Tombazis, modified the shape of the fins.

Unfortunately, no visuals have been communicated, but simply a descriptive text. The project called “Lima” internally (like the secret NASA plan in the film “Ad Astra”…) this time has“more elegant” fins. At the front, the spoiler is no longer as straight as the previous version.

In fact, it now has two flaps including the ends rise suddenly upwards, like the wings of an airplane! The shape of the points will not be frozen by the regulations, which will leave free rein to engineers.

In addition, the fin reaches two meters wide. However, wind tunnel studies are being carried out to determine a possible shrinkage of this appendage without disrupting aerodynamic turbulence.

The rear wing is also entitled to a redesign. Wider than the version released in summer 2019, it is also 25 millimeters lower. The “endplate” (amount located on either side of the fin) have an inward curvature rather than falling vertically as is usually the case.

Finally, other modifications have been made: the chassis is higher, as is the headrest. The flat bottom is redesigned, with adjustments to the rear brakes and the gearbox.

Further wind tunnel tests are planned before the publication of the official 2021 regulations at the end of October 2019.
