The last World Motor Sport Council in Geneva, Switzerland, did not indicate this in its communication, but the awarding of a bonus point for the author of the best lap in the race was indeed mentioned by the authorities.
Following an electronic vote which obtained unanimity within the Commission F1 and the strategic group, the FIA confirmed this Monday evening that the driver who sets the reference time in the race, starting from the Australian Grand Prix, will collect a bonus point, subject to being classified in the top 10.
The manufacturer associated with the driver will also collect the famous point. 21 additional points will therefore potentially be gleaned over the season.
"We've been looking at this solution for several months, and it represents a response to a detailed study of thousands of our fans around the world, says Ross Brawn, Director of Motor Sports at Liberty Media.
How many times have we heard drivers on the radio asking which team had the fastest lap. Now it will no longer just be a question of records and prestige, but a concrete motivation that will make the last part of the race even more interesting. “
