The war launched by Russia against Ukraine continues to cause shock waves in the world of sport. The day after the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to exclude Russian and Belarusian athletes from international competitions, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) announced the holding of an extraordinary World Council this Tuesday, March 1.

It is neither more nor less than the President of the FIA elected in December, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who announced it on his Twitter account Monday evening. “ An extraordinary meeting of the World Motor Sport Council will be convened tomorrow (Tuesday) to discuss issues relating to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, indicates the FIA press release. Further updates will be given after the meeting. »

The FIA being a federation recognized by the IOC since 2012, the prospect of no longer seeing drivers/co-drivers/teams of Russian or Belarusian nationality in motor competitions is very real. Monday, February 28, the Ukrainian Automobile Federation had already requested the exclusion of Russian drivers from the FIA.

For example, the fate of the pilot from the Motherland, Nikita mazepin, within the stable Haas en Formula 1 could be sealed following the decision of the world council.

THEEndurance is a particularly attractive discipline for Russians. G-Drive (the commercial name of the fuel distributed by the oil company Gazprom) is a team that has been running LM P2 races for a decade, and has just signed Daniil Kvyat for the 2022 season of the World Endurance Championship (WEC). Moreover, the publication of the official list of entrants to the 24 Hours of Le Mans has been postponed, officially “for administrative reasons”.
