The RACC calls for support from institutions for the future of the Spanish GP

On the sidelines of the Spanish Grand Prix a fortnight ago in Catalonia, Joan Fontsere, director of the Catalan circuit, estimated that the chances of a new contract with Liberty Media could be assessed at 90% for 2020. The Spanish event seems however on the hot seat to find the F1 Circus from next year, particularly with the return of the Netherlands.

And it is not the press release published this Friday by the Real Automovil Club de Cataluyna (RACC) which should reassure Catalan and Spanish fans. The Catalan federation is calling for global unity around the race, a sign, perhaps, that the future seems very unclear for the Iberian round of the World Championship, which has been based in Catalonia since 1991.

“The Club considers that the continuation of the F1 Grand Prix in Catalonia is a strategic decision, specifies the RACC in its press release. On a commercial, economic and sporting level, it is urgent to find the best solution. The grand prize has an economic impact of around 163 million euros on the service, automotive, tourism, transport and leisure sectors and 2 direct jobs.

The RACC asks the government of the Generalitat (the Catalan region), the Spanish state, the rest of the administrations and the business world, collaboration, consensus, solidity and unity of action to reach a stable agreement so that the Circuit of Barcelona-Catalunya continues to host F1. »

Besides the Netherlands on the Zandvoort track, which should benefit from the craze around Max Verstappen, Vietnam must join the calendar next year. A finish of two events which therefore logically threatens several rounds, of which Spain could be part.
