In a Japanese Grand Prix marked by showers which caused a long neutralization of a little over two hours, Fernando Alonso was one of the few drivers to attempt a two-stop strategy on the intermediate compound. Wearing new tires with 6 laps to go, the Spaniard quickly managed to get rid of Lando Norris, Nicholas latifi or George Russell but finally came up against Sebastian Vettel.
Launched at full speed after getting rid of George Russell, Fernando Alonso quickly caught up with Sebastian Vettel whose intermediate tires were deteriorating considerably at the end of the Grand Prix. Returning to contact with the quadruple world champion after several seconds of everything, the pilot Alpine tried everything to gain the upper hand over his rival until the finish line.
Thus, Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel offered us a little drag race at the exit of the last chicane which ended with a photo finish. Neck and neck over the last hectometers, the Iberian and the German were finally separated by only 11 thousandths to the advantage of the second. Almost successful bet for the Bull of Asturias who had to settle for 7e place under the checkerboard after having hosted the end of the Japanese Grand Prix.
