It was at the moment when he began to no longer believe that Nyck De Vries will finally realize his childhood dream, that of being tenured in Formula 1. The Dutch driver, FIA champion Formula 2 in 2019 with ART Grand Prix, will therefore have waited three years before being entrusted with a wheel in the premier category. His friend Pierre Gasly leaving the Red Bull fold and the AlphaTauri team to join Alpine from 2023, Nyck De Vries managed to gain the trust of Helmut Marko and sign with the team of Faenza (Italy).

World champion Formula E in 2021 with Mercedes, De Vries managed to get rid of his 2023 commitments in Formula e and in Endurance in order to get that F1 steering wheel that he coveted so much. One thing is certain, the Dutchman will be able to invite Alex Albon over a drink on the Paddock Club terrace to thank him. By leaving him his seat (following an appendicitis operation) during the last Italian Grand Prix, the Thai allowed his Dutch counterpart to show himself and seize the chance he had never had before in Formula 1, by signing an astonishing 9th place at the wheel of the Williams.

Monza changed everything

A performance that changed absolutely everything in the eyes of the different team bosses. De Vries has certainly always been an esteemed driver, but Monza has finally reassured those who felt that there was a risk in starting a 27-year-old driver who no one had dared to trust until then.

After the Italian GP, Williams' technical management had a crazy desire to continue the adventure with him, whileAlpine also began to consider it very seriously in the event of failure in negotiations with Pierre Gasly.

It was ultimately the fine truffle driver Helmut Marko who won the bet, happy to snatch the Batavian from Mercedes, and to ensure a quality replacement to compensate for Gasly's departure. Nyck De Vries will thus drive alongside the Japanese Yuki tsunoda 2023 soon.

« I want to thank Red Bull to give me this chance to drive in Formula 1, reacted the AlphaTauri neo-driver. After Formula 2 I took a slightly different path but F1 has always been my dream and I am very grateful to be able to achieve it.

I have already had the opportunity to familiarize myself with the 2022 single-seaters. I think that puts me in an ideal situation for next year. I spent a good part of my years karting in Italy and I always felt at home there. It's great to join an Italian team with a family atmosphere ».

« La Team AlphaTauri has had great success with Pierre, commented team principal Franz Tost. We will never forget his fantastic victory at Monza as well as his podiums in Brazil and Azerbaijan. I would like to thank Pierre for the efforts made in recent years and I wish him the best for the rest of his career.

We are now very happy to begin a new chapter with Nyck, whom we welcome with great pleasure to AlphaTauri. He is a very capable driver who has proven himself in many categories winning races and championships. His latest title is none other than the Formula E world championship, further proof that he deserves his place in F1 ».

With today's announcements, there are only two seats left to be officially filled in 2023: one with Williams, alongside Alexander Albon, the other with Haas to support Kevin Magnussen. The American Logan sargeant, currently 3rd in the Formula 2 championship, still holds the rope for the first shuttlecock, while the second seems to turn into a German-German confrontation between the current holder Mick Schumacher and the luxury replacement Nico Hulkenberg.
