First consecutive qualifying double for Ferrari since 2006

We weren't expecting Ferrari at such a party. The two red cars dominated the qualifying session for the Chinese Grand Prix held on the Shanghai circuit on Saturday. Sebastian Vettel set a new lap record (in 1’31”095) ahead of his teammate Kimi Räikkönen.

The Ferrari of the four-time German champion stole pole position from the Finn on the last lap. Indeed, Kimi Räikkönen had achieved the best first and second sectors but negotiated the final sector poorly. “It was amazing! The car was getting better and better”, Sebastian Vettel reacts hotly.

At Mercedes, we grimace. Lewis Hamilton aborted his final attempt and had to settle for fourth time, unable to increase his pace in Q3. The Briton went straight to the regulatory weigh-in without taking off his helmet. Valtteri Bottas precedes it with the third beat.

Both Red Bull de Max Verstappen et Daniel Ricciardo maintain their usual rank, behind Ferrari and Mercedes. Satisfaction reigns in the clan Renault with the seventh beat of Nico Hulkenberg and the ninth time of Carlos Sainz Jr.

Romain Grosjean (Haas, 10th) is the only French representative to have reached Q3. Esteban Ocon (Force India) stopped in Q2 (12th): “It was super close from the start of qualifying. We were comfortable in Q1 but I wasn't able to complete a good lap in Q2. Leaving with new tires will be an advantage”, indicates the Frenchman. Pierre Gasly (Toro Rosso, 17th) was unable to obtain his pass in Q2.

The race will take place on Sunday from 8:10 a.m. French time and can be followed on our live text.
