Renault, great end to the season?

It was after the German Grand Prix in 2008 that Renault had reversed the trend. After Nelson Piquet's second place at Hockenheim, the diamond team saw Fernando Alonso achieve a wonderful end to the season, with 48 points gleaned in eight races, while he had only collected 13 until then. The day after the 2009 German Grand Prix, the world champion once again has the same total, 13 units, and hopes for an end to the season in line with his expectations. “ The most important thing this weekend, he declared after the German Grand Prix, is that we are now competitive. We are therefore very optimistic for the races to come. »

Starting 12th on the grid, Alonso managed to finish in 7th position and score two points. A performance which, however, does not satisfy the Spaniard: “ The race was difficult. First of all, my start was disastrous and I lost quite a few positions in the first corner. Afterwards, the race was very competitive. » But the Renault driver is positive about this race and remains hopeful for the end of the season: “ The car is much faster. I set the best lap in the race and that's a good result. »

For his part, Flavio Briatore made the same observation about his driver's race. “ We only have two points today, but it was a positive weekend for the whole team. Fernando's pace was excellent, he set the fastest lap in the race and was able to gain several positions. » The boss of the Renault team now hopes that the end of 2009 will resemble on the track what happened in 2008: “ Now that the car is competitive, we need to continue on this path and make further progress throughout the second half of the season, as we did last year. »
