Rosberg snatches pole from Hamilton

Nico Rosberg took pole for the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim, beating his teammate Lewis Hamilton by a tenth, after setting a time of 1'14''363 on his only attempt. The local driver was already ahead of the three-time world champion during his first flying lap, but he had to return to the pits due to an “electronic problem” according to the team.

The Red Bull are in second line with Daniel Ricciardo before Max Verstappen. The Team Ferrari follows with Kimi Räikkönen fifth ahead Sebastian Vettel. Nico Hulkenberg (Force India) was seventh ahead of Valtteri Bottas (Williams), Sergio Pérez (Force India) and Felipe Massa (Williams), but the winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans fell back behind the Finn following a penalty.

McLaren failed to reach Q3. Jenson Button is 12th behind Esteban Gutiérrez (Haas), while Fernando Alonso is 14th between Carlos Sainz Jr. (Toro Rosso) and Romain Grosjean (Haas) who will have to move back five places on the grid. Jolyon Palmer (Renault) signed the 16th time of the session, but the Spaniard was penalized three places.

Daniil Kvyat (Toro Rosso) was eliminated in Q1. The Russian is only 19th behind Kevin Magnussen (Renault) and Pascal Wehrlein (Manor) and in front of his teammate Rio Haryanto the Saubers of Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson. The Malaysian will have to move back to the back of the grid following a penalty.
