Steiner does not expect an immediate miracle with the budget cap

2021 remains a highly anticipated season on several points, including the arrival of several major changes to the regulations in F1. First of all, on a technical level, with single-seaters visually different from the current cars used in the World Championship, and which should allow better competition on the track with the return of aerodynamics mainly based on ground effect.

But 2021 must also see the introduction of the famous budget cap in F1, demanded by several teams and which must limit the financial accumulation spent on performance by the teams. A limit set at 157 million euros for the 21 races on the menu, but which should not immediately modify the hierarchy according to Günther Steiner, Team Principal of Haas F1 Team.

“As always, the big teams will always have an advantage, calls back the manager. They just have more resources and more people to develop the 2021 car according to the new regulations, while developing a 2020 car.

The budget cap comes into effect in 2021. The first few years, I don't think I'll see a big difference in the hierarchy between the teams. There will always be the big three (Mercedes, Ferrari et Red Bull), then the others. We know it. Hopefully the gap narrows a bit over time.

We will definitely try to do our best with everything we have left to develop a good 2021 car.”

Haas F1 Team intends above all not to experience a 2020 campaign similar to that of 2019, where several development concerns during the season affected the performances of Romain Grosjean et Kevin Magnussen, the American team alternating versions of its VF19 to try to understand the lack of regularity observed throughout the races.

“We started reacting during the summer break to work on the 2020 car in order to avoid the mistakes made this year,” says Steiner. We don't want to repeat them. We are moving forward, analyzing and working hard on the 2020 car.”
