GT1 – Mercedes expects to suffer in Slovakia

With a victory in the qualifying race and a double the following day in the championship race, All-Inkl.com Münnich Motorsport crushed the Portuguese stage of the FIA GT1, in Portimao, at the beginning of July. A dream weekend which allows the German team to have a 47-point lead in the Teams championship over second-placed Hexis Racing. But this weekend, for the sixth round of the season, the second at the Slovakia Ring, it could be that the SLS GT3s are struggling.

“It will not be easy in Slovakia, because the route does not suit our Mercedes,
deplores team manager and driver Marc Basseng. We need to improve in qualifying, in order to be well positioned from the start of the races. The aim is to build on our success in the Algarve, leading up to the summer break, and finish on the podium. »

Info or intox ? On June 10, one of the two Mercedes SLS finished third in the Sunday race. Not bad on a circuit supposedly not made for cars bearing the star. Still, the Portuguese victories have boosted the morale of the troops, who are now aiming for the double crown. “Our goal for this second part of the season is to extend our lead at the top of the Teams championship, and obviously to improve our positions in the general Drivers classification. » adds team principal René Münnich.

A general Drivers classification currently dominated by the pair Yelmer Buurman-Michael Bartels, who total 86 points. But the All-Inkl crews are not left out. Marc Basseng and Marcus Winkelhock are second with only three points behind. Nicky Pastorelli is seventh with 73 points, and Thomas Jäger tenth with 48 points.
