The management of the Nürburgring circuit presented this Monday, August 17, a series of measures to the DMSB (German Motorsport Federation) to strengthen safety on the Nordschleife (north loop). These efforts were made following Jann Mardenborough's accident which cost the life of a spectator last March during a VLN event, forcing the organizers to introduce speed limits on certain portions of the route.
Among the 16 measures planned by the Nürburgring GmbH, seven of which are expected to be carried out between November and the beginning of 2016, most of them have been studied in order to enhance spectator safety. New protections, such as fences and barriers, will be put in place in several sectors. The Schwedenkreuz area will be limited in particular to spectators and the track will be resurfaced towards Flugplatz where the tragedy took place. On the other hand, the organizers plan to remove limited speed zones from 2016.
“The resurfacing will cover a length of 500m and will aim to smooth out the five bumps which are the result of several years of intensive use”, commented Carsten Schumacher, the director of the Nürburgring. “The unique character of the Nordschleife will be preserved. This is not only important for motorsport, it is also important for the industry which has been testing its cars for decades. »
These measures will be studied by the DMSB before being presented to the FIA Circuits Commission.
