The V8 Supercars will welcome other engines

Aware that the famous V8 will not be eternal in a market whose future is focused on the environment, the organizers of the V8 Supercars presented the “Gen 2” regulations which will come into force in 2017. The main change concerns the opening to other engines such as 4 or 6 cylinders alongside the traditional V8, with the possible presence of turbo, in order to continue to attract manufacturers of which there are five to date (Mercedes with Erebus, Ford, Holden, Nissan and Volvo).

James Warburton, the chairman of V8 Supercars, justified the decision by highlighting the need for brands to adopt engines other than the V8.

“It is imperative that this discipline remains relevant, interesting and viable for the teams. The current climate in motorsport is very clear. Manufacturers want to have the choice, otherwise they will not come. They want their DNA represented and we want that too. We'll keep ours with speed, noise and hard racing. »

The engine will not be the only element taken into account since different types of cars will also have the opportunity to register. 4-door sedans will be able to fight with 2-door coupes. However, certain elements must remain the same : the engine must be placed at the front, the power must be sent to the rear axle, the configuration of the car must be 4 seats…

“The power and loud noise of the V8 go hand in hand with this discipline. Our priority will be to maintain this acoustic effect characteristic of powerful machines, whatever the engine used”, added James Warbuton.

The regulations will be refined in the coming months to ensure a balance of forces. Details will be given at the end of 2015 so that tests can be carried out the following year.
