Van Gisbergen double winner for last Supercars at Pukekohe

The Sunday races were eventful and it was once again the Holden driver who made the difference. Shane Van Gisbergen (Triple Eight) is a monster. He manages race after race to write the lines of a career which will remain legendary in the discipline.. Only fifth the day before, the local hero had sworn he wanted to win at Pukekohe in order to conclude in style the 59 years of history of the Auckland track. SvG starts from pole in the 2nd race with his teammate Broke Feeney at his side. The first lap was eventful, as Van Gisbergen, Feeney and Davison distanced themselves. Anton De Pasquale (Dick Johnson Racing) was the victim of a spectacular collision with Brodie Koteski (Erebus Motorsport), the red and white Mustang was partially destroyed, but De Pasquale was unhurt. After the intervention of the safety car, Van Gisbergen restarted the race ahead of Davison (Dick Johnson Racing) and Chaz Mostert (Walkinshaw Andretti United). The Mustang driver will lose ground and fall to 4th place in this round. Van Gisbergen maintains the advantage until the end of the race. He won ahead of Mostert and Cameron Waters (Tickford Racing).

Van Gisbergen achieved his masterstroke in the last race. The Triple Eight driver only started 8th. He manages to gradually climb back up, taking advantage of the racing events. Shortly before halfway, he moved up to 3rd place in the wake of Andre Heimgartner (Brad Jones Racing), himself chasing Cameron Waters. Freed of Heimgartner while Waters had a little scare, Van Gisbergen is now in a position to win his 18th success of the season. In the last 7 rounds, he and Cam Waters will fight one of the most epic battles of the season. Bumper hits are out. The control of both men prevents this fight from ending in a wall of tires. Three laps from the checkerboard, Van Gisbergen placed an incredible attack on the Tickford driver. The two cars make a few turns door to door, the audience holds their breath. It is the local hero who ultimately wins. Overwhelmed by emotion, Shane Van Gisbergen offers a victory celebration of which he has the secret, in burnt gum and smoke.

He is well ahead of the general classification with a solid lead of 525 points over Cam Waters. Pukekohe will have, for its last ball, offered a unique spectacle to the numerous spectators who came to the stands. The next round of Australian Supercars is none other than the flagship event of the season, the Bathurst 1000 Kilometers from October 6 to 9. All Supercars results can be found on Autohebdo.fr.
