The news broke this morning during the celebration of the third anniversary of Cupra, the Spanish manufacturer. Mikel Azcona will be one of the drivers of the brand's ETCR program. Azcona made his first laps last week during the first official tests organized by the championship promoter.
The young Spaniard is a regular at the brand since he won the TCR Europe in 2018 at the wheel of a Seat Leon. He then took part in his first WTCR season in 2019. With 7 podiums and 2 victories, Azcona is an important driver for Cupra.
He will be associated for the electric touring championship with the two in-house development drivers: Jordi Gené and Mattias Ekström. A fourth car should be entered from the start of the championship, but the name of the last driver is not yet known at this time.
We can imagine that a boy like Pepe Oriola surely came to meet the boss of the Cupra competition, Xavi Serra.
The pure ETCR is scheduled to begin on June 19-20 at the Vallelunga circuit in Italy.
