Erik Jones takes his first victory at Daytona

Erik Jones (Toyota) won his first victory in Nascar Cup Series after his 57th start in the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway (Florida). The Joe Gibbs Racing driver survived multiple crashes during the race to take the checkered flag first.

The race was notably neutralized on the 49th lap following the exit of Paul Menard (Ford). The restart that followed tightened the peloton and caused a pileup involving the Fords of Kurt Busch, Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano. A few laps later, it was Kyle Busch (Toyota) who saw his weekend end by hitting the wall.

The tension then decreased until another crash occurred on the 155th lap with Jimmie Johnson (Chevrolet) involved. This accident preceded the one in which Clint Bowyer (Ford) was involved a few laps later.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr (Ford) appeared as a serious contender for victory by winning the first two segments, but the Roush Fenway Racing driver was caught by Kyle Larson (Chevrolet) in distress with his car.
