At 48, the age of his old racing number, Jimmie Johnson looks (a little) to the past of the NASCAR. The American with seven titles decided to honor the legend Richard Petty by using his legendary sky blue decoration during the Daytona 500 (February 18) on his Toyota Camry from the Legacy Motor Club team.

“The honor of my recent induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame has given me time to reflect on my racing career, which spans more than 21 years, and the people who have been instrumental in my journey, both on and off the track, said Jimmie Johnson. My relationship with Richard, Kyle, and the entire Petty family is very important to me, and my goal was to celebrate their legacy with this design.

“It was in 1964 that Petty won his first Daytona 500 in a Plymouth and went on to win the championship. In 2006, I experienced the same series of events, which makes it very personal for me. »

Jimmie Johnson also uses the inscriptions painted in white like on Richard Petty's Plymouth, with the number of horses written on the hood. A faux-chrome sticker is reminiscent of the bumpers of the time.

This livery also celebrates 75 years of presence of the Petty family in NASCAR. “The King” Richard Petty (seven titles on the clock) was preceded by his father Lee Patty (three-time champion) and his son Kyle Petty. His Richard Petty Motorsport team participated in the events of NASCAR Cup Series between 2009 and 2021, before being taken over by GMS Motorsports… then Legacy Motor Club.
