La NASCAR presented the new aerodynamic rules which will come into effect from the Phoenix Raceway round on March 12 on low-speed tracks. They aim to improve the spectacle on short ovals and road circuits.

The package includes slight modifications to the Next Gen to significantly reduce the downforce generated by the cars. This configuration will be used at all tracks where "rain gear" is now available: Charlotte Roval, Chicago Street Course, Circuit of The Americas, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course, Martinsville, New Hampshire, North Wilkesboro, Phoenix, Richmond, Sonoma and Watkins Glen.

The main change is a two-inch reduction in the height of the rear spoiler blade, which therefore sees its dimensions halved. At the base level, the exterior walls and three diffuser fins are removed, as are the fins located in the engine compartment. All these changes were validated by the teams during tests conducted in January in Phoenix.

« This corresponds to a reduction of around 30% in support, specifies NASCAR technical delegate, Dr. Eric Jacuzzi. Nwe came back at a level of support almost similar to that of the mid-90s.”

Much of these changes were inspired by the Garage 56 program, a project that NASCAR, Hendrick Motorsports, Chevrolet and Goodyear are working closely on to bring a NASCAR Chevrolet Camaro to the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2023.

" The pilots reported to us that the level oftire grip and the performance of brakes had reached a level almost too high for this type of circuit, explains Jacuzzi. We therefore decided to take a big swing and we are now waiting for their feedback, but during the Phoenix test they appreciated having a freer car, able to move and use the entire track. »

To ensure that NASCAR teams have sufficient time to adjust to these changes, an additional 50-minute practice session will be implemented during the Phoenix race weekend on Friday, March 10.

Another element tested in Phoenix makes its appearance this season, the exhaust silencers. Successfully introduced during the Clash at the LA Memorial Coliseum, they will also be used during the Chicago city race
