SRO initiates a GT2 category project

There is no question of the old GT2 category, now known as GTE in the ACO series, but SRO Motorsports seems to strongly believe in the upcoming launch of a GT2 category.

As announced during the press conference of the entity led by Stéphane Ratel on the sidelines of the 24 Hours of Spa, this category aims to bridge the gap between the current GT4 and GT3 categories, with cars based on Supercars only.

The idea is to apply the concept of the GT4 and its cars technically close to the series, to much more efficient cars, offering more power (between 640 and 700 hp) but less aero downforce than a GT3.

Aero developments will thus be limited compared to production cars. It will be impossible to modify the location of the engine block (and therefore lower the center of gravity), or that of the gearbox. The power-to-weight ratio should be set at 2,1.

Amateurs targeted in sprint formats

This category, reserved for Ams, should thus be able to strengthen the grids where only GT3s are present, such as in Great Britain or Asia, areas where the GT4 notably complements the flagship category of SRO Motorsports.

“If, just in case, but the GT3 is doing well, in the future the GT3 starts to trend towards the GTE specifications, we will have a backup solution. » also recalls Stéphane Ratel.

We should therefore see from 2019, and only in Sprint formats, a specific race reserved for these GT2s as well as a presence on certain rounds of the British GT and the Blancpain GT Sports Club. 2020 should see GT2s arrive in Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup, Blancpain GT Series Asia and Pirelli World Challenge GT.

Stéphane Ratel is perhaps hoping for three manufacturers to develop such cars for 2019. Note that the name was not registered, and that SRO Motorsports was easily able to take over the name.
