Super GT – Kovalainen and Hirate champions at Motegi

Heikki Kovalainen and Kohei Hirate won the second Super GT 500 race of the weekend at Motegi, the final event of the season, and thus secured the title at the wheel of their No. 39 Lexus RC F. The Team Sard drivers won ahead of Kazuya Oshima and Andrea Caldarelli (Lexus n°6), the 2016 vice-champions.

Heikki Kovalainen wins the Super GT 500 title in his second season in the Japanese discipline. It is also his first title since his coronation in the World Series by Nissan in 2004 and his first consecration in GT.

Tsugio Matsuda and Ronnie Quintarelli (Nissan n°7), the 2015 champions who were still leading the Championship before the start of the weekend, slipped to 3rd in the Drivers' standings after taking 7th place in the last event.
