Guerrieri: “I don’t want to underestimate any of my rivals” for the title

Two weeks before flying to China and the Ningbo event (September 13-15), Esteban Guerrieri (Honda) took stock of his situation in the World Touring Car Cup (WTCR). The Argentinian is leader of the championship with 24 points ahead of his direct pursuer, Norbert Michelisz (Hyundai).

The Münnich Motorsport driver, third in the 2018 season, is of course aiming for the title. The first leg of the Asian tour takes him at the scene of his second World Touring victory, in 2017 with a private Chevrolet. “That was the event that started it all.

My victory in the rain really impressed William De Braekeleer (director of Honda Motor Europe. Editor’s note). He came to shake my hand and that led to a steering wheel for Honda (replacing the injured Tiago Monteiro. Editor’s note). »

Esteban Guerrieri sizes up his opponents before the last 12 races. “I don’t want to underestimate any of my rivals. The Lynk & Co of Cyan Racing (Björk, Muller, Priaulx, Ehrlacher) still have some margin and maybe they will prepare something for the end of the season. They have a very competitive and professional driver-car combination.

There is also the BRC Racing Team, quite simply because'they are outgoing champions (with Gabriele Tarquini) and that they know how to reverse a tricky trend over the course of a weekend. »

Twice winner in 2019 (in Morocco and the Netherlands), Esteban Guerrieri feels galvanized by the challenge of a coronation. “It’s definitely exciting. The gaps between the cars are small, so if you can do a good job in treacherous conditions like the dryer, extracting more performance out of a set of tires, you can move up five places in one go.

This can make a big difference at the end of the weekend. There is always a small opportunity to save a little time, it is very important. »
