A new weight compensation system in 2020

La Formula 1 does not have the prerogative of difficult to understand rules. The WTCR also causes headaches as the sporting regulations can be complex at certain points. For the 2020 season, this will be modified in order to improve the show.

The compensation weight is used to make the fastest cars on the field heavier or to lighten the most difficult sedans. This was until now determined with the times achieved in qualifying and races. In 2020, it will only be evaluated with test times.

“For too long we've seen engineers at the pit wall focus on lap time management and scratch their heads talking to the drivers on the radio.”, plagues François Ribeiro, head of Eurosport Events, the promoter of the WTCR.

Result, drivers were invited to voluntarily slow down during the race so as not to suffer too heavy penalties on the scales. The result of this change is, according to the WTCR, to improve the competition with drivers who will constantly attack in order to gain places rather than focusing on weight compensation strategy.

“The calculations of the compensation weight will be fairer, continues the press release, will change less and will be close to the real performance of each car. »

In addition, a new ranking, reserved for young talents, will be created. It will concern drivers aged 23 years or less on January 1, 2020 and who have not previously competed in more than three WTCR events.
