Vergne widens the gap

With three victories in four races, and a second place, Jean-Eric Vergne has had a perfect start to the season in Formula Renault 2.0 WEC. The Frenchman once again dictated his law in Barcelona. His teammate at SG Formula, Julien Abelli, was the first to make him fall this season.

Vergne widens the gap

Sunday morning, Arthur Pic took full advantage of his pole position and took control of the race ahead of Jean-Éric Vergne, before the latter overtook him to take the lead of the race. Meanwhile, Albert Costa (Epsilon Euskadi) comes back: seventh on the starting grid, the Spaniard is third after two laps. He then tackled Arthur Pic at the end of the pit straight and finished second.

In the peloton, Miki Monras, Julien Abelli, Nathanaël Berthon and Hugo Valente are competing for 4th position. Berthon overtakes his competitors and returns to the wheels of Miki Monras. The final rounds are indecisive to say the least. Albert Costa returns to the leader's wheels, while Arthur Pic, 3rd, must hold off Miki Monras and Nathanaël Berthon. Slowing down on the last lap, Costa finished the race with difficulty, but barely managed to cross the checkered flag, in second place.

With three victories in three Formula races Renault 2.0 West European, Jean-Éric Vergne savors. "I had a good start, but Albert Costa came back very strong... I was a little lucky today." Second, Albert Costa could have lost everything at the end of the race. “I really made a big effort to come back from 7th place to 2nd. I was gaining ground, I had victory in my sights, but I had a fuel supply problem at the end of the race. »

Sunday, at the end of the day, pole sitter Julien Abelli got the best start ahead of Jean-Éric Vergne, Miki Monras and Arthur Pic. In the lead, Abelli proudly defends his skin against attacks from Jean-Éric Vergne. The argument between the two boys benefits Miki Monras, Arthur Pic and Albert Costa – back from 9th to 5th position – who are back in the lead duo. The five cars move together.

The positions change when Albert Costa overtakes Arthur Pic to gain 4th place. Costa then attempts an attack on Monras. The attempt failed and Costa damaged his front wing in the process. He therefore gives ground and can do nothing in the face of the return of Arthur Pic, Nathanaël Berthon and Benjamin Lariche.

Solid, Julien Abelli won his first victory in the Formula Renault 2.0 West European Cup: “I had a good start, then the whole race was complicated. I was slower than Jean-Éric, we had to not make mistakes and contain him properly.”

First in the morning, second in the afternoon, Jean-Éric Vergne remains solid leader of the Formula Renault 2.0 West European Cup: “Julien made no mistake, I couldn't overtake him. When you can't win races, it's better to score points for second place! »
