Since the start of the 2000s, there are only four people who have won the legendary Macanese event twice in a row: Edoardo Mortara (09-10), Felix Rosenqvist (14-15) and more recently Dan Ticktum (17-18). . This Sunday, another man achieved it. This is the Macanese Charles Leong (Smart Life Racing), in fact already winner of the event in 2020. The history books will probably put this double coronation into perspective, the Grand Prix taking place between local drivers and being contested not via there Formula 3 international but via Chinese F4, for obvious reasons linked to the pandemic.
Stolen departure for Chang
20 years old and already winner of Chinese F4 and Formula Renault Asia in 2017, the young man made two European appearances since he competed in three FIA F3 Europe races and two FIA F3 races between 2018 and 2019. This Sunday, in his streets, the native of Macau outrageously dominated the competition for winning with 25 seconds ahead of Andy Chang (Chengdu Team), already runner-up in 2020. Fastest in qualifying and the qualifying race the day before, Leong was never really in difficulty, apart from perhaps - be in the first round.
Under the threat of Andy Chang, his compatriot, Leong had to resist for two turns before Chang was himself attacked by the Chinese Li Sicheng (Blackjack Racing), third in the event. After Mandarin, he even had to defend more aggressively by delaying his braking. Once a small gap was created, Leong took advantage of the drive through penalty given to Chang for a stolen start to gain a 25-second margin. Chang came out in third position but caught Li Sicheng a loop later, before also relegating the Chinese to 25 seconds.
