It is not the most difficult victory of his young career but Liam Lawson (Carlin) mastered his subject to win the Sprint Race at Spa-Francorchamps, his 3e success of the year. Last member of the Top 5 on the starting grid, the New Zealander made the difference at the start.

Helped by the retirement of Jehan Daruvala (Prema) even before the start, Liam Lawson found himself 2nd behind Ralph Boschung (Campos) from the first turn after even going onto the grass to get rid of his opponents, including Theo Pourchaire (ART Grand Prix). In the process, the Kiwi gained the upper hand over Boschung who was unable to do anything against his braking attack in Les Combes.

From then on, the protégé Red Bull was able to set his own pace and take the lead. If he had to negotiate a restart after his teammate went off the track Logan sargeant at Pouhon and the intervention of the Safety Car, Liam Lawson did not tremble at the conclusion. He then won by almost 4 seconds over Jack Doohan (Virtuosi) and Ralph Boschung.

Pourchaire loses points

In a good position to fight for the podium, Théo Pourchaire ultimately left empty-handed, or almost. Fifth ahead of championship leader Felipe Drugovich (MP Motorsport) during the first part of the race, the Habs could do nothing against the Brazilian's furious return during the second.

Passing through the pit lane during the Safety Car period, Felipe Drugovich, who had meanwhile fallen back to 12th, took advantage of his fresh tires to come back up like a cannonball. In the space of 4 laps, the Brazilian went from 12th to 4th position, finishing ahead of Théo Pourchaire, 6th under the checkerboard. In the championship, Auriverde is now 25 points ahead of its pursuer. A gap which could be wider this Sunday since he starts in pole position and Pourchaire only 8th.
